Saxony's fortress in Brandenburg invites you to conquer!

This impressive castle and fortress was built in the 16th century on the foundations of a medieval castle. Today it is Germany's only surviving fortress surrounded by such a mighty earth wall. During a tour of the fortress you will discover secret passages, the powder tower and a cleverly planned fortress portal that you could not easily take.

Until 1815 Senftenberg was a Saxon fortress which was supposed to protect Dresden from the Prussians. But the story often plays out differently than expected and "relocated" the fortress to Brandenburg. The exhibition in the castle tells why Senftenberg was always a place on the border and why a small castle here became a Renaissance castle and a strong fortress.

The permanent exhibition takes museum visitors on an exciting journey through time through the history of Lusatia, where they get to know Senftenberg as a city between Sorbian roots, medieval splendour, mining tradition and the dawn of the 21st century. Visitors can discover historical jewellery ranging from the oldest fire brigade in the city, a huge wine press to valuable church inventory, or take a seat in the classroom on wooden school benches from the past century.
Experience - Mining - Lakeland
How did Lusatia become a mining district with smoking chimneys and how did the Lakeland develop? In the show mine in the castle, the visitors go "under the earth" and the Lusatian coal on the track. At the desk of the director of Ilse Bergbau AG you can leaf through old files and immerse yourself in the everyday life and working world of the Lusatian mining district with historical films. Not only small visitors can interactively follow the history of coal and energy in the knowledge gallery or search for their favourite piece among over 100 jewellery briquettes.
Saxony's fortress in Brandenburg
In the 17th century, the old Senftenberg Castle was converted into an imposing castle and fortress to protect the city of Dresden from Brandenburg-Prussia. After the Congress of Vienna it suddenly found itself on Prussian territory. The show provides information about the changing role of Senftenberg Fortress.

One, two - bang - child laughter and cannon shot are not to be excluded from the castle. From fortress games to birthdays in historic walls, small miners in the mine or school lessons like 100 years ago, the museum offers many adventure offers for children and adults.

Also in the castle is the "Lusatia Art Collection". Since the mid-1980s, the collection of contemporary art from painting, graphic art and sculpture has established itself with more than 2500 exhibits. The "Kunstsammlung Lausitz" shows the artistic face of today's region with all its tensions, harmonies and ruptures and is still considered an insider tip among art lovers.
