Even when you enter the Singers' and Merchants' Museum in Finsterwalde, you feel like you have been transported back in time. Because in the centre of the presentation stands the old shop of a certain Mr. Wittke. When G. F. Wittke founded his materials, tobacco, cigar and distillation business in 1850 - according to his advertisement in the Finsterwalder Wochenblatt - he hardly suspected that his small trading company would form the core of the district museum Finsterwalde, founded in 1981. Even today, the originally furnished merchant's shop with its Wilhelminian interior and the goods and advertising utensils from the first half of the 20th century is the prototype of the Tante-Emma shop.

One focus of the Finsterwalder Museum's exhibitions is on retail and related advertising. A drugstore with products from the GDR era, historical vending machines and advertising signs and the old Wittke coffee roasting oven continue the theme.

Of course the famous Finsterwalder singers must not be missing either. The history and effect of the singer's song can be traced with the help of many objects, just as the song can be heard in various variations.
The "Finsterwalder Chorwurm", which accompanies visitors through the centuries from the Middle Ages to the present day, is the structuring design element of the exhibition. It is peppered with objects on the history of singing that the museum has collected over many years or received from friendly lenders. As befits a "chorewing worm", it allows the history of singing to be relived acoustically through numerous sound examples.

The museum is also open for groups outside the regular opening hours by appointment.

The museum can be easily reached by public transport. From Finsterwalde railway station towards Finsterwalde Südpassage.
