The history of Doberlug Castle is inextricably linked to the Saxon Wettin family: The magnificent Renaissance castle once belonged to the Electors of Saxony and was built after the dissolution of the Cistercian monastery of Dobrilugk. As a secondary residence and hunting lodge of the dukes of Saxony-Merseburg, the castle experienced a heyday in the 17th and 18th centuries under the Saxon secondary school of the same name. Later it was used by Saxony and after 1815 by Prussia as an administrative and residential building and as a prison. After that it served as a barracks in the GDR. In 1994, the castle finally went to the town of Doberlug-Kirchhain, who extensively renovated it.

Architecturally, the mighty four-wing complex refers to the Renaissance, but was not completed until the end of the 17th century. Today visitors experience the castle as an exemplary restored building, the origin of which - one of the oldest Cistercian monasteries in Brandenburg - can still be seen in the architecture of the castle. The splendidly coloured coat of arms of Saxony-Merseburg above the portal and the mighty gargoyles of the castle attract the eye as much as the richly decorated gable. The interplay of the castle with the neighbouring refectory and the church of the former Cistercian monastery is particularly attractive. The baroque planned town of Doberlug, founded by Duke Christian I in 1664 and just a few steps away, is also worth a visit.

In 2014, for the First Brandenburg State Exhibition "Prussia and Saxony. Szenen einer Nachbarschaft" the castle was reopened after intensive restoration and redevelopment and attracted more than 90,000 visitors. After a short break, it opened its doors again in April 2015 and is currently being developed into a museum under the direction of the Museum Association of the Elbe-Elster district and the Stadt-Doberlug-Kirchhain. This tells with a modern and media extensively prepared permanent exhibition the history of monastery, castle and planned city and presents changing special exhibitions. In addition to guided tours of the castle and monastery history, guided tours in the field of museum pedagogy for all age groups are offered by prior arrangement. In addition, the Friends of the Castle are responsible for reviving the area with an extensive programme of events.

The tourist information office of the town of Doberlug-Kirchhain and the Elbe-Elster-Land Tourism Association are also based in the castle.

Visits to the monastery church and the refectory are not included in the museum ticket. Please contact the Evangelische Kirchengemeinde, Monika Anders, Tel. 035322-2881.

Supplement to opening hours: For groups a visit is possible after registration also outside the opening hours.
