The Niederlausitzer Heidemuseum in Spremberg Castle is one of the largest museums in the south of Brandenburg. The exhibitions illustrate the relationship between man, landscape and culture in the region, which is characterised by lignite mining.

The life and traditions of the Sorbian population in the bilingual region of Lusatia are represented by traditional costumes as well as domestic and folkloric objects. The natural history exhibition provides information about the fauna and flora of the region, and the open-air facility next to the castle gives an insight into the rural way of life of the local farmers. The industrial development of southern Lower Lusatia is illustrated above all by the textile, glass and lignite industries.

Furthermore, a broad section is dedicated to the life and work of the writer Erwin Strittmatter. The art collection on works by and about Strittmatter deserves special mention.
