14469 Potsdam

Leisure Wheelchair users
Not far from Potsdam's city centre, in the beautiful Sanssouci Park, on the terraced vineyard, the castle is "without a care in the world". It was Frederick the Great's favourite place. It served him as a summer residence and pleasure palace in which he wanted to enjoy his private life. The castle was built between 1745 and 1747 by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff according to the king's ideas and sketches. It is regarded as the main work of German rococo architecture. The rooms, which are characterized by splendour and elegance, are originally furnished. It exhibits masterpieces by Watteau, Panini and Pesne.

A visit to Sanssouci Castle is subject to fixed admission times. Tickets are available from 10:00 a.m. for the respective day at the castle ticket office. Ideally, you should book your ticket in advance. Available in the ticket shop are the combined tickets sanssouci+ Online, charlottenburg+ Online as well as occasional tickets to the exhibitions of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens (unfortunately 100% reduced tickets for visitors with disabilities are not available in the online shop. Please check in at the cash desk).

The sanssouci+ Online-Ticket entitles you to one one-day visit to all palaces of the SPSG (Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten Berlin-Brandenburg) in Potsdam, including Sanssouci Palace (not valid for special exhibitions). Exceptions are Sacrow Castle and Stern Hunting Lodge. For the Belvedere on the Pfingstberg in Potsdam, the reduced admission price applies. When purchasing a sanssouci+ Online ticket, a fixed admission time is booked in Sanssouci Castle.

t Information for guests with reduced mobility

Short description

Brief description of the Sanssouci Castle:
  • 9 designated disabled parking spaces available
  • Indoor access: via 1 step/ via ramp
  • Guest toilet for guests with restricted mobility, infinitely variable. Door width: 92 cm, movement area in front of WC: 90 cm x >150 cm, right: 77 cm x >150 cm, left: 74 cm x >150 cm, handles available
Special features of the castle:
  • Access to the Sanssouci Castle is via a ramp (pushing aid required!) and a threshold of 4 cm. The usable passage width of the entrance door is only 72 cm.
  • A maximum of 3 Rollis per group can take part in a guided tour, as there is a very high visitor frequency in the castle and the groups must pass through quickly. More relaxed guided tours (also for a larger number of guests in the Rolli) can be organised by the New Chambers.
  • The ticket office in the castle is only accessible via 2 steps with a total height of 32 cm, alternatively tickets can be purchased in the stepless visitor centre at the Historische Mühle. A museum shop and the castle kitchen are directly accessible from the outside via mobile aluminium rails.
  • In the castle there are two rental roller blinds, another 2 for use in the park are available in the visitor centre at the historical mill.
Special features of the park:
  • The park can be divided into three parts with different height levels: 1) main path / fountain, 2) castle level, 3) orangery level. Large differences in altitude have to be overcome between these three park areas. Certain places in the park are recommended for this, see "Outdoor paths" or

    car parking spaces

    • Number of designated disabled parking spaces near entrance 9
    • comment
      • The car park with 9 disabled parking spaces behind the visitor centre, near the Historical Mill, is about 200 m from Sanssouci Castle and is recommended for visiting the castle and other higher parts of the park.
      • The route to Sanssouci Castle from the visitors' car park leads past the Historical Mill. After crossing the Maulbeerallee, a steep stretch of road with a gradient of up to 12% leads up to the castle. Here a pushing aid for guests in wheelchairs is indispensable!
      • Other parking spaces may be recommended for visits to other areas of the palace park, e.g. at the Neues Palais or the underground car park at Luisenplatz.

    Access and paths Indoor area

    • Number of level(s) 1
    • Total height of steps 4 cm
    • via ramp
    • Ramp height 0.47 m
    • Ramp length 3.10 m
    • Ramp inclination 22
    • Entrance door passage width 72 cm
    • passage width of the narrowest of all other doors to be used 72 cm
    • Comment:
      • The main entrance of the lock is accessible via 3 steps, which can be bridged with a ramp (pushing and manoeuvring aid required). Movement area on the platform at the lock: 100 cm x 119 cm).
      • Guests in wheelchairs are let in through the exit door (right next to the entrance). The width of this door is 77 cm, but due to massive door leaf decorations there is only 72 cm space as a passage.
      • A threshold of 4 cm must be crossed directly at the main entrance, otherwise there are no further steps during the visit to the castle.
      • All other doors in the castle are considerably wider (on average double-winged and approx. 130 cm wide, narrowest door 93 cm near the library). They are open in summer, in winter they are opened by the castle guide.
      • During the tour of the castle there is a narrow point between the small gallery and the library: here there can be "traffic jams" on a rather narrow stretch of the road, as only one wheelchair driver can look through the door to the library at a time. The latter must first drive back approx. 5 m to the main road before the next one can pass the bottleneck to the library.

    • Comment Directly behind the castle entrance is the counter where the audio guides are distributed. This is not lowered, but the staff will help guests in wheelchairs.

    Access and paths Outdoor area

    • stepless path guidance possible
    • Road condition: Apart from the "Maulbeerallee" road crossing the park, the Ökonomieweg and the Selloweg are the only asphalted park paths, all others are paved with water-bound pavement.
    • Comment:
      • The park Sanssouci is approx. 300 ha large. Of the 20 park entrances, those at the Orangerie and the guard staircase to the castle are not suitable for guests with reduced mobility.
      • The park can be divided into three parts with different height levels: 1) main path / fountain, 2) castle level, 3) orangery level. Large differences in altitude have to be overcome between these three park areas. The following places in the park are recommended:
        • transition from 1) to 2) in the Sicilian Garden, gradient 7 - 11 % over a length of approx. 60 m
        • Transition from 2) to 3) past the Visitor Centre, the Historical Mill and the Nordic Garden, gradient 6 - 10 % over a length of approx. 45 m
        • The sloping plains at the famous vineyard terraces are much too steep and should not be used!
      • The paths through the park are very extensive. There are seats available, but some of them are far apart from each other. In winter the number of seats is limited.
