With its dome visible from all directions, the Nikolaikirche on the Alter Markt is probably the most striking building in the state capital Potsdam. After the old Nikolai church burnt down in 1795, its reconstruction was planned in 1800. However, the laying of the foundation stone of the building planned by Karl Friedrich Schinkel was delayed until 1837.
According to various planning ideas, a central building had prevailed that resembled a cube on a square ground plan. Initially, only the substructure was completed. The dome roof was added later. The church was consecrated again in 1850.
After severe destruction in World War II, the church was consecrated for the third time in 1981. Since then there has been a service every Sunday again.
In addition, the church invites to numerous concerts and events. The church can be visited daily between 10 am and 6 pm. The 42-metre-high viewing platform offers guests a magnificent view over the entire city and nearby Havelland.
