Experience a masterpiece of German engineering art from 1882 in action.

A hissing and rumbling goes through the factory halls. The flywheels and pistons set themselves in motion panting. The machines soon found their old rhythm - to a beat that hasn't changed in over 130 years. The LOUISE, idyllically situated in the middle of green forests between Bad Liebenwerda and Doberlug-Kirchhain, is the oldest briquette factory in Europe and a fascinating technical monument.

The LOUISE is an old lady - long retired, but full of life. The first steam boilers were fired in 1882 to start the steam engines of the briquette presses. Thick clouds of smoke rose from the high chimney of the boiler house. Since then, the plant has been running almost without interruption until November 1991 and has supplied briquettes all the way to Berlin for heating the tenements of the growing metropolis. Shortly after decommissioning, demolition was already decided. But it came differently. Already in the following year the factory was declared a monument and soon opened for the first groups of visitors.

Whoever enters the work is taken into a long past era, into a time in which industry and culture, mechanical engineering and art were not so far apart. The original rooms and machines have been preserved. The smell of lubricating oil is in the air. Everything seems as if the workers had only briefly left their places, as if production could start again at any moment. And in fact, up to 14 systems can be set in motion during factory tours. With a daily output of 600 tons, the LOUISE was one of the smallest briquette factories in Germany. The compactness of the plant makes it easy for visitors to follow the coal's path.
Tips:
Steam time: A very special and Germany far unique experience is the demonstration of the historical briquette press in the genuine steam enterprise: on the day of the miner, thus on each 1. Sunday in July, as well as to further selected dates.

Bergmannsvesper: Enjoy afternoon coffee with your group directly in the colliery's hall. A special highlight is the delicious LOUISE cake in briquette format. Let us surprise you! For the Bergmannsvesper a reservation is necessary.
