It all started with a good idea. Some ducks and swans should swim on the moat of the castle. Not enough for the museum director at that time, with helpers from the "National Front", several enclosures and aviaries were built in the 1950s, the birth of the Hoyerswerda Zoo. Over the years, the Hoyerswerdschen have tirelessly expanded YOUR zoo, and more and more threatened and exotic species have been kept and bred. With an area of six hectares it is not a very big zoo, but big enough to make a little trip around the world with about 800 animals.
Young and old globetrotters alike feel at home at Hoyerswerda Zoo. Let us take you on a little trip around the world from Lusatia. No matter whether you stand eye to eye with our tiger lady or flirt happily with the meerkats. Crocodiles, snakes, our dwarf hippopotamuses await you in the tropical house and see who has hidden among the leaves of our tropical flora!
After the world tour through the zoo follows the time tour through the city museum. In the new ErlebnisReich, our exhibition for the whole family, the history of the city is presented with many exciting discoveries and tricky puzzles.
The African-style SAMBESI restaurant spoils the guests of Zoo & Schloss Hoyerswerda with hearty meals and is particularly family-friendly with its unique indoor playground.
The Hoyerswerda Zoo will be gradually converted over the next few years. A so-called "Geozoo" is to be created. There, the animals are not kept according to systematic, but according to geographical criteria.
The Hoyerswerda Zoo offers curriculum-oriented guided tours on various topics in which school and kindergarten children gain fascinating and often surprising insights into the world of our zoo animals, the role of zoos in nature and species conservation and everyday zoo life.
